The awards of the British Academy of Arts, nominations for Golden Globe and Emmy awards are nothing compared to the crazy popularity of Sherlock among the audience. The series of production of the Air Force channel, based on the cult stories of Arthur Conan Doyle, from the first series scored high ratings around the world. The action takes place these days: Holmes rides a taxi and uses a smartphone, and Watson has a blog. Do not expect to see Sherlock with a pipe in his mouth – here, he simply glues himself a nicotine patch. But still he does not know that the Earth revolves around the Sun. From the common with Conan Doyle Sherlock, the hero of the series has only a cap and deduction: unlike the literary character, the serial Holmes is hot-tempered, sharp and overly active. But let’s not be cunning: it’s impossible to dislike Benedict Cumberbatch in this image!
Winner of three Golden Globe awards, three Emmy statuettes and three actor guild awards, Downton Abbey perfectly recreates the picture of England in the early twentieth century. The series tells about the life upsets of the Earl of Grantham family living in the Downton family estate in Yorkshire. Here we are talking about love, and about war, and about honor, and about betrayal. The main advantage of Downton Abbey is its stunning shooting, beautiful costumes and scenery: in every detail there is a spirit of English aristocracy. It is not surprising that the creators managed to accurately convey the atmosphere of that time, because the budget of one series is 1 million pounds! The efforts of the producers were not in vain: in addition to the prizes and nominations received in 2011, Downton Abbey was called the most talked about series of critics.
It’s hard to believe that this tragicomedy series with fiction elements was shot by the British. Well, in any way, a brutal scenario with an abundance of obscene language and English aristocracy does not fit into our imagination. The premiere of the youth series took place in 2009, and the final series of the last season was released in 2013. The action takes place at the Center for Correctional Services, where young people are sent for re-education. However, they are not here to clean up the territory. Once lightning enters the Center, and adolescents acquire superpowers: immortality, telepathy, the ability to rewind time, etc., which are not used for the most good purposes. Over the course of five seasons, the characters and their abilities have changed, but they still continue to do crazy things: their favorite pastime is to kill their overseer.
“The end of the parade”
The mini-series “The End of the Parade”, consisting of only five episodes, was shot based on the novel of the same name by Ford Madox Ford. The film adaptation of the story of a love triangle between an English gentleman, his unfaithful wife and a young suffragist was praised by critics. The authors perfectly recreated the picture of England at the beginning of the 20th century with the problems of that time. Events in the series proceed quickly (in a few minutes of the film a couple of years can pass), but not expressively. There is no spectacular shooting or escalating music situation – each scene is restrained in English. Action fans are unlikely to like this picture. However, “The End of the Parade” is worth a look if only to see Benedict Cumberbatch as a devoted husband and in love with a young girl.
The British drama series, which tells about the life of young people from Bristol, was released in 2007 and ended in 2013. Despite the fact that the focus of events is mainly on the bad habits and customs of the young generation – drug use, smoking and crime – it received good fame during all over the world. At first glance, the life of British youth is one big party. But behind endless parties, teenagers hide their problems: in relationships with parents, friends and the opposite sex. The shooting style deserves special attention: dim colors and minor music – in a word, solid British melancholy. Nevertheless, there is a place for subtle English humor. The series has 7 seasons, each of which tells about the life of different heroes.
The series, which received four nominations for the Golden Globe, talks about the difficulties of working in the media sphere in the middle of the last century. The plot focuses on journalists working on the creation of the Hour news program on the Air Force. In particular, the young and ambitious Frederick Lyon, who is faced not only with the restriction of journalistic freedom of speech and the bias of the channel, but also with a number of strange events. Here there is a place for mysterious deaths, and the secret service of MI-6, which had a hand in them, and the personal experiences of the main characters. Unlike many British TV shows, “Hour” is shot quite dynamically, and like them – spectacularly. It is worth saying that the creators of the series clearly did not lose out with the actor selected for the role of the protagonist: it is impossible to take your eyes off Ben Wishaw in this role!
The British crime drama is based on real events that took place in England in the first half of the twentieth century. Sharp peaks then called the youth gang, which, according to one version, sewed into the tweed caps of the blade. According to the stories, members of this clan always defended the interests of their family, were rich, stylish, and respected their own code of honor and behavior. The plot of the series tells about the members of the Sharp Visors gang – the Shelby brothers, who returned after the war and established their own rules in the city. They plunder and gamble. The premiere of the series took place two years ago, and the shooting of new series continues today.
Psychological detective series tells of the investigations of police inspector John Luther. The creator of the series Neil Cross, according to him, was inspired by the legendary detectives Sherlock Holmes and Colombo. From Holmes, Luther had non-standard methods of investigation, and the presentation of the plot, when the criminal was known to the viewer in advance, was borrowed from Colombo. The series takes place in London, at their center – John Luther, an inspector who conducts investigations, but keeps his skeletons in a closet and often does more insane things than those he hunts for. The series received two nominations for the Emmy Award as the best mini-series, and Idris Elba, who played Luther, received Golden Globe as the best actor in the television series.
“Killing on the beach”
The detective series, released in March 2013, tells about the secrets and mysterious incidents of a small town. In the center of the dramatic plot is the murder of an 11-year-old boy whose body was found on the beach. The creator of the series Chris Chibnal says that he wanted to recreate in his work a picture of how death affects a close community and how it reacts to this tragedy.
Interestingly, during the filming of the series, only four actors knew exactly who committed the crime, and the “killer” was informed about this just two weeks before the shooting of the final scenes. In January 2015, viewers saw the second season of the series, and the premiere of the third is planned for next year. Killing on the Beach was praised by critics and prestigious awards, including a BAFTA and an Emmy nomination.
